A Little Background On The Word Redneck
Redneck is historically derogatory word that originally was used to describe the white and poor Americans in the South. Historically, the word is derived from the white laborers and farmer's, who worked outside predominantly, sun burnt necks. The has recently expanded its original meaning to include the medieval and bigoted ways of segregationists and conservatives in the South.
In the early nineteen hundreds, it was a common word that was used to describe the politics of the South's predominantly poor farmers. Back then the term was used by the group themselves, who proudly used it at their rallies and union meetings.
Members of the American Mine Workers Union both welcomed and adopted the term. They began even wearing red bandannas, which themselves became famous, to their meetings and rallies. During a good portion of the thirties and twenties, in fact, the word became nearly synonymous with strikers and union members. A lot of linguists believe this development with the word happened independently and simultaneously as the first.
By the seventies, however, the terms had become offensive bits of slang and were used to describe those who were opposed to ways of modern times and harbored racist and bigoted views. They were especially appropriate terms when they were used to denote the period's equal rights detractors and pro segregationists.
Even now, when used to denote people with extremely out of date beliefs, the word is hardly offensive. And sadly, such people, like those who are anti homosexual rights and marriage, are in no limited supply.
Today though, there are still Southerners who proudly describe themselves as rednecks and wouldn't have it any other way. They wear camouflaged patterned shirts and hats that display the word and list so called 'blue collar' Southerners as their favorite comedians. To these citizens, the term is in now way offensive.
Redneck or hick is an offensive word that used to be used in order to describe a poor white person. Well, we are here to give you a funny look at things. You will surely laugh.
